How to measure
What Should Your Nipple Look Like in the Flange?
Step 1: Bust Measurement
To measure your bust size accurately, wrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your breasts, across the nipple area. Hold both ends of the tape with one hand at the side of your breast, and use your other hand to gently press the tape between your breasts so it sits snugly against your chest. This will give you a more precise measurement of your bust.
Step 2: Underbust Measurement
To measure your underbust, wrap the measuring tape around your chest, just below your breasts. Make sure it goes around your back and under your armpits. Use a mirror to check that the tape is level and parallel to the floor. It should sit firmly against your body—snug, but without any fingers underneath the tape—for the most accurate measurement.
Step 3: Do the math
To work out your cup size, subtract your underbust (rib cage) measurement from your bust measurement. The difference in centimetres determines your cup size in the Australian system:
1–2 cm = AA cup
3–4 cm = A cup
5–6 cm = B cup
7–8 cm = C cup
9–10 cm = D cup
11–12 cm = DD cup
13–14 cm = E cup
15–16 cm = F cup
17–18 cm = FF cup
19–20 cm = G cup
For example, if your bust measures 95 cm and your underbust is 85 cm, the 10 cm difference means you’d be a D cup in Australian sizing.

FAQs about Breast Pump Flange Size Guide
What is the most common flange size?
The most commonly used flange size is 24mm. Many breast pump brands, including Modavista, offer a variety of sizes—such as 27mm flanges and inserts ranging from 15mm to 21mm—to suit different needs. It’s important to keep in mind that every woman is unique. Breast shapes and nipple sizes can vary greatly, so taking the time to measure your nipples ensures you’ll find a flange that fits comfortably and works effectively for you.
Will correct flange size increase milk supply
Yes, using the correct flange size can have a big impact on your milk supply. A well-fitted flange allows for more effective and comfortable pumping, which helps signal your body to continue producing milk efficiently.
Can you put too much areola in a flange?
Yes, you can. If too much of your areola is being pulled into the flange tunnel, it may mean the flange is too large. This can cause discomfort and may actually reduce how much milk you express. Ideally, only a small portion of the areola should enter the tunnel during pumping for the best comfort and milk flow.
What if you're in between flange sizes?
If you’re between flange sizes, it’s a good idea to try using an insert first. Many brands, including Modavista, offer additional inserts to help you customise the fit. If you’re still unsure or between insert sizes, it’s generally recommended to go with the slightly larger option for better comfort and flow.
